January sets the tone. It’s the doorway into a new year, a fresh opportunity to realign our hearts, our priorities, and our focus. As the pace of life quickly begins to pull for our attention, Jesus gently but firmly reminds us of what truly matters.
In Matthew 6:19–21 (The Message), Jesus says:
“Don’t hoard treasure down here where it gets eaten by moths and corroded by rust—or worse!—stolen by burglars. Stockpile treasure in heaven, where it’s safe from moth and rust and burglars. It’s obvious, isn’t it? The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be, and end up being.”
This passage isn’t about possessions—it’s about positioning. Jesus is pointing us to the truth that whatever holds our attention will eventually hold our direction. What we value most quietly shapes where our lives are headed.
“Your treasure and place you end up are linked—- seek God and the things of heaven above everything. Everything in your life will come into valence when your walk with God is prioritised.”
When we begin the year with a focused heart toward God, things start to fall into place—not because life becomes perfect, but because our foundation becomes firm. Prioritizing God doesn’t remove challenges; it anchors us while we walk through them. It brings clarity when decisions feel overwhelming and peace when circumstances feel uncertain.
January is the month to pause and ask: Where has my attention been resting? What has been competing for my devotion? Focus isn’t about doing more—it’s about choosing better. Choosing heaven’s perspective over temporary distractions. Choosing intimacy with God over constant noise.
“Don’t loose focus of the things of God for it is our foundation in the increasingly dark world.”
In a world that grows louder, darker, and more demanding, our focus on God becomes our light. When we intentionally set our hearts on Him, we are strengthened to stand, to discern truth, and to walk with purpose. Focus keeps us grounded when everything else feels unstable.
This January, let your focus be intentional. Let it be gentle but firm. Each moment spent seeking God is never wasted—it’s stored up as eternal treasure. As we keep our eyes on Him, we’ll find that our steps become steadier, our hearts become lighter, and our lives become aligned with what truly matters.
As you move through this month, remember: where your focus goes, your life will follow. Choose God first—and watch everything else find its proper place.
